Our Issue
Healthy Wyoming is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit advocating for improved health care access and affordability in the Equality State.
Historically, our work has been focused on expanding Medicaid and closing the coverage gap. As the threats to access to traditional Medicaid continue, we broadened our scope to include protecting and improving all forms of Medicaid.
Wyoming ranks 49th in the nation for affordability and accessibility of medical care. It is one of just ten states, and the only one in the Rocky Mountain West, that has yet to pass Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), denying thousands of our hardworking citizens access to critical health care coverage they need. Neighboring states, such as Montana and Utah, have passed Medicaid expansion and reaped the benefits of improved healthcare access, better patient outcomes, and a strengthened economy.
By expanding Medicaid, Wyoming would create about 450 new jobs over the next five years and grow economic output by almost $70 million a year, making Wyoming more attractive to recruiting and retaining providers to live and work here.
Medicaid is a lifeline for thousands of Wyomingites who rely on it for basic health care needs. In Wyoming, Medicaid provides coverage for nearly 70,000 extremely low-income parents, pregnant women, children, and individuals with disabilities. Medicaid is a joint federal-state social insurance program that pays for medical and long-term care for low-income and medically needy individuals and families.
In June 2025, Congress passed the “Big Beautiful Bill” that will create significant impacts to the nation and to Wyoming. With more than a trillion dollars in health care cuts, we can expect to see the country’s health care system change in ways that hurt the Americans struggling the hardest to get by. In Wyoming, the law will:
● Lower employment growth by as many as 192 jobs over the next five years.
● Slow economic growth by $27.8 million per year.
● Reduce personal income by as much as $14.6 million each year.
